The Winning Cocktails

Mixologist Competition

(Brought to you by Access Skills Ireland)

On Friday 2nd July, learners undertook a Mixologist competition organised to allow them display the skills and techniques they learned during the recently completed Professional Bartending module delivered by tutor Liam Duffy.

The competition required each learner to research recipes, understand processes, display mixology techniques and show flair in seasoning and presentation. They were required to prepare an alcoholic and non – alcoholic cocktail.

Guest Judge was Mr. Neil Cummins of Irishtown House Bar, Dublin. Mr. Cummins commented on the high standard of drinks produced by all learners but there could only be two winners,

1st place: Francis Morrissey

2nd Place: Kim Meaney

Second Place Cocktails

Francis and Kim stood above all the rest for their technique, flavour and balance of both cocktails they each produced. The winners each received a winner’s trophy, a professional cocktail kit and a box of chocolates.

The learners truly enjoyed the experience and were very motivated by the positive feedback they all received.

GDPR Staff Awareness Training

GDPR: ONE OF THE BIGGEST THREATS TO OUR BUSINESS IN 2018 – IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into force on the 25th of May 2018, replacing the existing data protection framework under the EU Data Protection Directive.

The DPC has launched a GDPR-specific website www.GDPRandYou.ie with guidance to help individuals and organisations become more aware of their enhanced rights and responsibilities under the General Data Protection Regulation. Companies, found by the DPC, in breach of these data compliance regulations face huge penalties, with fines up to €20m or 4% of their global turnover – whichever is higher.

GDPR in your Sector

There are a number of steps needed to be taken to bring your business to a compliant state. These steps are generally referred to as the 12 steps. However, Step 1 is concerned with Staff awareness as 80% of data breaches are caused by employees. As new data protection regulations come in to effect, it appears that your staff could be your greatest threat. According to the results of a recent study commissioned by DataSolutions, 23% of businesses said they would be forced to close if found to be non-compliant and subject to these financial penalties.

It’s easy to forget that all employees, every single day handle personal data. For example, every time an employee performs a credit card transaction with a customer, or is in possession of a customer’s address, phone number or email address they are handling an individual’s personal data. Make no mistake, this is the biggest threat to your business in 2018.

Assumption of compliance could have a devastating effect on a business. As GDPR compliance is a continuant, penalties will be mitigated based on the training.
